THE MEDICAL COUNCIL OF INDIA

The Medical Council of India – a statutory body – was constituted in February,1934 under an Act of Parliament – the Indian Medical Council Act,1933. This Act was repeated by Indian Medical Council Act,1956 (102 of 1956). Some amendments to this Act were made in 1958 (36 of 1958) and in 1964 (24 of 1964)
Latest amendments were made through an ordinance promulgated by the President of India on August 27,1992. By this ordinance, new sections 10A , 10B and 10C were introduced in the Act by an ordinance promulgated on January 2, 1993 mainly to restrict mushroom growth of medical colleges. This amendment was duly notified by the Govt. of India in the extraordinary Gazette of India part II Section 1 on 3rd April,1993 with effective date 1st June,1992.
