Majaz was born at Radauli near Lucknow on October 19, 1911. His father, Siraj-ul-Haq was a respectable landlord, and a law graduate from Lucknow university. Majaz's early life was spent in affluent cirumstances. "My life," he says in one of his poems, "was a bed of velvet and brocade." He received his schooling at Lucknow, and his college education at Agra and Aligarh. He had given proof of his poetic talent even during his schooldays at Lucknow, where, under the influence of his friend and counsellor, M.Hassan Jazbi, he had started writing poetry. At Aligarh he was influenced, among others, by Fani Badayuni to whom he took his poems for correction. Majaz also studied at St. Johns College, Agra, where he stayed for sometime in the college hostel. The atmosphere of freedom available in the hostel, combined with the society of his easy-going friends, encouraged his innate tendency to indulge in the sensuous pleasures of love and wine. The habit of drinking later became an addiction, and contributed to the poet's early death. His unsuccessful romance with a "young lady", was the precipitating cause of his first nervous breakdown, which was followed by two more attacks after short intervals of normalcy.
